When in the military, my husband was stationed in the pacific.
We were assigned to a base located on a tropical island.
The year round temperature was between 70 and 80 degrees. Trade winds enable us to keep the windows open year round and enjoy a nice relaxing breeze. We had no need of heat or air conditioning except on a rare occasion when the night time lows reached the lower 60s. This only happened maybe once or twice a year. On those occasions we were fortunate to have purchased electric space heaters. These units could provide enough heat to make this night comfortable enough for sleeping. We did have to keep them serviced just like a larger built in system. They still needed the filters changed and an occasional repair. It was nice not to have the expense of a whole house system to care for. Living in the tropics is wonderful. The palm trees, beaches and sunshine are very relaxing. Not having the day to day worry about your heat or air conditioning is an added bonus as well. We now live back in snow country where we are forced to endure long cold winters. I can still dream of when we lived in the islands and picture the warm sunny days. For now, I can only hope to return someday. The reality of life is dealing with repair and maintenance of our HVAC system to ensure our year round comfort. I am thankful for the experience we had and the break from reality it afforded us. Back to reality for now.
