Easing load on the heat pump this year

My wife keeps asking me if she can please turn down the thermostat.

It’s not Winter so that would be a no.

If she was wanting to save on heating costs by turning down that thermostat setting, I’d be all for it. I mean, I could put on a sweater, right? But heating costs are not a problem where we live. It’s the air conditioning costs that I’m trying to curb. I work from home so I’m dealing with the higher thermostat setting all day. Perhaps I’m a bit more acclimated to it now that it’s July. My wife works inside the zone controlled HVAC comfort of a very nice building downtown. She is spoiled rotten when it comes to working in air conditioning. The woman even has a thermostat inside her office. Meanwhile, I’m working from our little home office with a fan blowing on me to keep me from sweating. So when she pleads for more air conditioning as soon as she walks in the door, I just smile and shake my head no. Once the sun hits the horizon, then the thermostat starts cooling the house down to a comfortable temperature for sleep. I have programmed the digital thermostat as part of my plan to lighten the load on the heat pump this year. I also sealed the house up tight with new weather stripping and I keep the drapes pulled all day to stop the direct sunlight heating. It’s July now so I’ve gotten one utility bill from June that was almost 25 percent lower than the same period last year. That’s what I’m talking about. So I think I can endure my wife’s disgusted glare every now and again as we continue to maintain good thermostat discipline.
